On May 28, 2025, the mid-term progress meeting for the China Association for Science and Technology’s 2024 National Society Project—“Research Report on High-Performance Inorganic Fibers and Products for Aerospace Applications,” undertaken by the Chinese Society of Textile Engineering—was successfully held at Wuhan Textile University.

Xu Weilin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, president of Wuhan Textile University, and vice chairman of the China Textile Engineering Society; Professor Wang Yingde of the National University of Defense Technology; Bai Meng, deputy secretary-general of the China Textile Engineering Society; and more than 20 experts from research institutions, universities, and enterprises across the country attended the meeting, which was chaired by Professor Chen Fengxiang of Wuhan Textile University.

During the symposium, Academician Xu Weilin outlined the key research directions and areas for the project and offered suggestions for revising the relevant reports, proposals, and case studies. He also emphasized that applying inorganic fibers and fiber‑based products to aerospace applications is one of the priority research focuses of the State Key Laboratory at Wuhan Textile University, expressing the hope that this project will serve as an opportunity to bring together expertise from diverse fields, leverage complementary strengths, and strengthen collaboration and exchanges with various institutions.

The conference held a ceremony to present appointment letters to the “Project Chief Consultant,” the “Lead Expert,” and the “Specially Appointed Expert.” The certificates were presented by Xu Weilin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of Wuhan Textile University, and Vice Chairman of the China Textile Engineering Society.

During the discussion session of the meeting, Director Bai Jie of the China Textile Engineering Society provided a detailed overview of the project’s objectives, progress, and interim achievements. Experts reviewed and deliberated on the draft of the “Industry Report on High-Performance Inorganic Fibers and Products for Aerospace Applications,” while also offering constructive suggestions on how to ensure the high-quality completion of tasks such as compiling case studies and preparing special policy briefs.

Concurrently with the conference, participating experts were also escorted on a tour of the Textile Science and Technology Museum at Wuhan Textile University.

High‑performance inorganic fibers are critical strategic materials urgently needed for the development of the aerospace and defense industries; however, several key scientific and technological challenges remain unresolved, leaving certain high‑performance inorganic fibers still subject to external constraints. It is hoped that, through the implementation of this project, a suite of deliverables will be produced, including high‑quality cutting‑edge technical research reports, technology roadmaps, policy briefs, and case studies on industrial development, thereby bolstering technological innovation and the breakthrough of critical technologies in the high‑performance inorganic fiber sector, overcoming bottleneck issues in some areas, and advancing the high‑end and high‑value‑added development of related industries.

The Second National Academic Conference on High-Performance Inorganic Fibers and Their Products was successfully held.

On July 4, 2026, the “Fourth National Defense Science and Technology Summit Forum—Sub‑Forum on High‑Performance Inorganic Fibers and Their Application Technologies” and the Second National Academic Exchange Conference on High‑Performance Inorganic Fibers and Products were successfully held in Changsha, Hunan Province. The event was co‑hosted by the China Textile Engineering Society, the School of Aerospace Science of National University of Defense Technology, and the National Key Laboratory of New Textile Materials and Advanced Processing, with the Professional Committee on High‑Performance Inorganic Fibers and Products of the China Textile Engineering Society serving as the organizer. The conference was chaired by Liu Haitao, Director of the National Key Laboratory of Novel Ceramic Fibers and Their Composites at National University of Defense Technology, and brought together more than 140 participants, including experts and enterprise representatives from across the country in the field of inorganic fibers.

Industry Advantages

Silicon carbide fiber-reinforced composites can be classified according to the ceramic matrix and the type of reinforcing fibers. Among them, continuous silicon carbide fiber-reinforced silicon carbide ceramic matrix composites (SiC/SiC) are currently recognized internationally as one of the most promising materials for high-temperature engine structural applications.

Technological Advantages

In 1975, the Yajima group at Tohoku University in Japan synthesized continuous SiC fibers with diameters of approximately 10 μm, using polycarbosilane as the precursor. Shortly after Japan’s successful development of SiC fibers, China recognized the material’s potential applications and initiated efforts to establish a technological R&D framework for silicon carbide fibers, embarking on a journey of independent innovation.

Breaking through core technologies! Zhongxing New Materials has achieved the engineering-scale production of third-generation continuous SiC fibers.

The company has successfully scaled up the production of first-, second-, and third-generation continuous silicon carbide fibers by leveraging its proprietary electron-beam‑assisted active‑atmosphere crosslinking technology, with the resulting products achieving performance levels on par with international best practices. With all key technologies and equipment fully under domestic control, this milestone marks a critical step forward for China in the field of high‑performance continuous ceramic fibers.
